Whenever I start my mr2 it cranks, fires and then pops a CEL and dies. I've jumpered the fuel pump at the diagnostic port but it still dies.

'89 MR2, Silvertop w/ blacktop ECU, yaris COPs, running the original igniter with coil output grounded to firewall. IGF should be coming from the igniter but I'm not sure that it is. It did this both with and without the igniter/coil hooked up.

TIA!

Should check that all four IGT from coil plugs share IGT between igniter and ecu (tap into). IGF is not used on the yaris coils (ECU still needs IGT from stock igniter firing stock coil though).

Make sure you identified which pin on coil plugs are IGF/IGT?

Did you check if the cel code is stored? Also that the coils get 12v when ignition is at both ON and START?

All coils have 12v, the engine starts and runs for a couple of seconds on all four cylinders and then the CEL comes on and the engine dies.

The IGF from the 2NZ COPs is just hanging, not hooked up to anything. I originally had grounded the IGF from the COPs but disconnected them because I wasn't getting spark. IGF is supposedly provided by the original igniter with a coil, grounded. I'm getting tach signal, the tach is working.

I don't have anything to check the CEL code with.

I assume the coils get 12v in start because the engine starts.

I'll double check all grounds and wiring tomorrow, maybe the igniter isn't properly grounded.

Just found through googling about using the CEL in diagnostic mode to check for a code. I'll try it tomorrow.

Also nice to know I'm not the only Vancouver 20v around! Do you autoX?

Ya check those and the CEL. I would clear it (battery off for a minute or so) and get a fresh code from another failed start. Sometimes these things give multiple codes when the ecu is not sure what is going on.

Youre certainly not, I know of at least 3 others and sure theres more!

Are you on DK (Dorikaze)? I don't autox but would really want to try this summer once I get some things sorted with my own 20v.

Is this a new swap or was the car runnng before and you modded the coils on?

Will do, just need to get a new battery because the old one isn't holding a charge. Lol year old motomaster eliminator.

Nope, I wasn't even aware of DK. Check out the UBCSCC. They do winter autoX too. http://www.ubcscc.com/

The swap has been running since 2007 although it's mostly been in storage since 2009. I started it up last year and moved it across town but it's been sitting for about 8 months since. It always fired up fine but it had a high tension problem since I ordered some magnecor wires that didn't fit, that they wouldn't refund, even after I sent them a 20v distributor cap and my original wire set plus one of theirs back to show that the terminals were the wrong size and didn't fit in the cap. They stopped returning my calls. Classy guys.

I guess I'll check every wire in the meantime and do the CEL flashy thing.

Thanks

So today it's a nice sunny day, well, sunny for Vancouver in the spring. I throw a freshly charged battery in, check continuity for IGF from igniter to ecu and fire it up. It just starts, no CEL or anything. The timing is way out of wack but it starts! The mr2 rides again.
