Went to the track last night. It was pretty cold so I don't think I had good traction but I was in the 14's. Don't know if I could hit 13.99, but the officials said I would have to stop racing because after market turbo, you will need a fire suit. My friend has the rest of the time slips right now. This is the only one I got.

After I made that pass I felt a miss fire. I checked my plugs and this what happened to the #4 plug.

It is a Denso Iridium part #IQ16. That thing is burnt up! I did not drive to the track with the Denso's so I put my regular NGK's and now when I hit around 8lbs of boost and up, it just breaks up. I can drive it, but it kicks and jerks when getting up there. A couple people told me I will need a aftermarket ignition system like an MSD box. Any ideas?

Oh yea, I was also running 15" wheels in the front because of my brake kit. I had 14" wheels in the back because I had two Nitto Nt555r's laying around that were 14".

What happened my plug. Did I lean out or something?<br /><br />

its going to take some set time until you get conftable driving the car also that plug looks real bad you should check that all plugs looks the same if not check your injector that they are all sprying the same amount of fuel.

Yea I need more time behind the wheel. It was only that one plug that gave me problems so I don't know what's going on. I don't know if I have a weak spark, or too much fuel.

My Wide-Band was reading fine so I don't think it's going lean.

Where do I begin .

1st and foremost , the track official is a freakin moron . If they are using NHRA rules, then there is no rule that states that you need a fire suit for a car equipped with an aftermarket turbo. If that were the case no turbo Honda would be allowed to race without a suit.

2nd , concerning ur plugs, q16's are too hot , they are pretty much a "5" in ngk ratings . Stock 4agze uses a ngk 6. on your set up I would be running some ngk 6 plugs at minimum, but I would do 1 step colder and get some 7's just for security.

Your elapsed time seems to be on par with your trap speed. With drag radials you should be getting better 60 ft times. 2.1 is what I would expect on street tires. Do a nice burnout to heat up radials before each run. Bring your 60 ft time down to 1.8 and I see a 14 flat happening easily . You may need to turn up the boost by a psi or 2 to hit 13s.

Could you post your set up again ? How much boost ?

Lol at the track official. They were alright though.

Ok so how do I truly understand how and where to locate these colder plugs because of course I have read about them, but every time time I go to "Autozone" or "Advance Auto Parts" I tell them I need colder plugs. They don't know what I'm talking about. They always just pull up what they have on their computers like some platinum Champions or something. Do you have a part # for me or should I just go to Toyota?

Yea, In the beginning my burnouts weren't that good, but they got way better throughout the night. I might have needed to bring down the tire PSI down even more than I did. Plus it got very cold that night.

I have a (1985) Big port head & newer 7 rib Block with Arias pistions, Pauter rods, ARP head studs, and adjustable cams that are at stock setting right now.
Ebay T3/T4 with log manifold, Tial wastgate. 800cc injectors, and a Haltech. Of course a better turbo set up is in the plans, but it's a decent street car right now. I just want to get those track times down because it's probably going to be a while before I get the new turbo & manifold.

I was at 15lbs of boost at the track.

Platinum and iridium plugs are not needed. Cheap copper plugs will be fine. Just ask them for some ngk bkr7e . They are really cheap online . Just google ngk 7 copper plugs. If you local autozone / pep boys sales guy doesn't know what 7 range plugs are then he is a dumbass and shouldn't be employed there.

Bkr6e would be 6 range ngk plugs
1 step colder would be bkr7e
2 steps colder would be bkr8e
And so on .

What kinda power are you making ? By your trap speed my guess is 170-180 whp max.

Thanks! I will see what the local auto parts store has again. Lol! Back in October when I picked my car up after the Haltech was installed that thing pulled 219whp on the Dyno. I wish I still had the sheet but I losted it cleaning. I'm sure they maxed it out on boost though.

I'm using a Greddy EVC boost controller and when racing had it set to 70%. I raised it and lowered it a bit but really wasn't looking at the boost guage. Didn't really notice boost go pass 15psi.

hey ricanrolla i would post the plugs that i use in my car you should be in the 7 or 8 heat ranges

219 whp should do better than a 95 mph trap speed. May be you had your boost controller set low at the track or these dyno numbers are seriously optimistic . In any case get some more seat time and the times will drop.

i totally agree with evo_lucian neither platinum or iridium should NOT be use since they create so hot of spark , the tip gets so hot and could create preignition.I think for the horsepower u making ngk #7 heat range sparkplug are just fine.Wideband oxygen sensor should only be used for tuning purpose when tune is done sensor should be taken out if kepted in exhaust will damage them.

i use iridium plugs on my car without a problam 2 years and the same plugs part# bkr8eix stock#2668.

the sparkplug u show is damaged becuase of preignition is melt this means u cold be running lean on that cylinder be a cause of bad low octane gas , hot spot in combustion chamber that self ignites , too advance ingition timing (maybe),faulty injector(check them by doing injector balance test)if i were u, i would go cooper ngk racing plugs and do a wot run turn it off right away and remove spark plug check for insulator nose color (white mean lean,brownish burning good, black powder rich).indivial egt probe is great for determing lean cylinders but is expensive .

Alright, when I get a chance I will use new 7 or 8 plugd and do the testing. Hopefully it's just the plugs and I don't have a bigger problem.

Learning to read plugs is a very valuable skill.

I am of the belief that egt guages only tell what HAS happened to the engine, and not what IS happening. You will most likely no be looking at that guage when driving. More than likely you will be looking at wideband and boost. Datalogging on the other hand is another case.

Btw I don't think you need to go colder than 7 heat range.

When I was uising Megasquirt, I did have a egt but my friend who tuned RX7's kept complaining that a egt is doing nothing for him so I went ahead and got a wide-band. I still have a egt but it's not installed.

I went ahead and got some NGK "BKR7E" plugs. Car feels good, and boost feels good again. I just haven't got it to WOT yet. Later.

Take it up to WOT it should be fine. Btw I run 13's at the track yesterday . ***** tires prevented me from hitting 12s.

Yea, I took it on the highway and WOT today. No issues as of now. Nice runs at the track huh? You have good numbers. RWD or FWD?

That's great news. Hope you see you post new times soon.

The time I posted is mainly to show you how much a good 60 ft helps .

On the 1st day of the event I was having some issues and I only managed a 14.6 @ 90 mph with a 2.2 60 ft .

With issues worked out on the second day. 1st run I put down 13.1 @ 104 with a 1.8 60 ft. 60ft makes a lot of difference. Second run , bad launch 14.1 @ 101 with 2.251 60ft .

My goal for the day was 1.7 60 ft (street POS tires) and a 12 second pass.

Btw my car is a st185 celica gtfour with a wrc gen 3 3sgte swap. Not a 4ag but eh...

Won 14 second bracket officially. I am also the fastest celica or 3sgte ever timed in on my island.

I did notice your 60 ft times in the last post (those make a pretty nice difference) so next time at the track that's what I will try to work on.

I'll probably take my tire pressure down to 20 psi.

Good job with your car & times! Since you are AWD what do you do with tire pressure?

I don't think I can stress how vital 60 ft times are. A tenth of a second saved there usually lowers you 1/4 mile time by 2-3 tenths of a second generally.

You need to experiment after warming up the tires a bit more . Try launching a bit higher. If you get wheelspin the lower tire pressure a bit. Experiment and see what works for you .

In my case people usually tell me cause the car is AWD that I should launch high and feather the clutch off the line, that wasn't working for me. I bogged every time I tried that. So I went and did what I felt was better for me. I brought rpm to 6000 and popped the clutch on the 3rd yellow. I had some 15 inch rims with some 205 tires up front' that I borrowed from a friends car cause my tires were done and my regular 16" rim with 205 rubber on the back. The front tires were scrambling fro traction but the back was propelling the car forward but I still ended up with a 60 ft of 1.8.

For tire pressure , on my best run they were both on 30 psi ( what I drive on daily) I tried dropping pressure in my case but it didn't help. If I had been on my 16 " rims up front I am confident I would hit a 1.7 60 ft and hit 12.8 - 12.9. In retrospect I am happy with the time. Stock 3sgte with a boost controller . My lil old celica runs faster than evo's , sti, s2000, mustangs, and a lot more cars that cost more so much more than what I have invested . Toyota power .

the 60 ft its the most important part when you are drag racing. also the method that i use to get good and consistent 60 ft its to use the launch control feature in my ms built boost and preload the drivetrain 1.7 all day and not breaking parts not bad for a fwd car.
