Blacktop engine with Tomei poncams dyno graph (stock factory ecu) Reply  Edit

Dyno result for mildly modified blacktop in AE92 Corolla with Tomei Poncams 264/256. Factory automatic ecu with open trumpets (70mm long), factory headers and 7a head gasket. 100 octane fuel. Tuned using distributor, adjustable exhaust cam gear. Might try upping the fuel pressure my next dyno trip.

Sorry, no baseline runs with this setup. However just did a compression test on the engine, and since changing the camshafts the compression has fallen from 210psi to 190psi.

those numbers are flywheel rating, or wheel rating?

Compression came down most likely because the Tomei cams have a later intake valve closing event.

Thats power to the front wheels. I have the exhaust cam at 107 degrees according to a toda cam pulley chart. However I know that the thinner head gasket shifts the timing a bit, so I can't really say for sure what the actual cam timing is.

122#/ft @ the wheels is VERY good... hp is also good, but the torque is a stand out

The car (AE92 approx 1900lbs with C60 gearbox) does feel quite fast. From the shape of the graph i believe another 5hp is possible if the rev limit could go to perhaps 8300rpm.

I'm going to dyno it with a Mine's ecu hopefully by next week. That ecu rev limits to 8300rpm. Not much more mods other than a 2.5 inch exhaust starting from the branch pipe (2 into 1) and an underdrive crankshaft pulley.

mad respect for you and that engine.... so would u say that the tomie cams gave u the high whp rating. good lock on the dyno run post some updates

Hard to say what exactly the cams gave but the upward slope of the graph at the rev limit is a good sign. Also on the positive side the camshafts dropped into the head and gave almost the same valve clearances as the standard cams. No shim adjustment was required at all. The engine idling when cold has the distinctive "cammy " sound but smooths out when it warms up. Theres no noticable drop in low rpm power. All i need now are a few more rpm's as it really runs to the limiter quite quickly.

ok to me the 158whp it pretty damn good for just i/e cams without EMS is real impressive to me my bt made 133whp sotck and if i can get that much hp without EMS i would be on cloud 9 lol how much u get the cams for and where u order them from?? been looking a set for a while

The cams I got through a local racing connection but I see them listed online for around US$600-650. Most stockish blacktops make around 135-138 on our local dyno. Now, I wouldn't say my engine in only running I/E mods. I figure I have gained 10-12whp between the headers(2-1 pipe), thinner head gasket and the exhaust cam pulley. Then factor in many hours on the dyno adjusting fuel pressure, cam timing and distributor settings. And remember I am using high octane fuel. One of the issues with the stock ecu is that it really pulls timing when any detonation/pinging is detected. I have seen where this can cut 10whp very easily. So for a daily driver you will probably need some good octane booster to reduce this. Of course a well tuned engine management system is the ulitmate answer but getting a reliable system and tuner can be challenging. So I have not gone that route yet.

curious as to which header ur using everybody say changing the stock header won't yield any significant hp what's ur take ?? the 650 for the cams is above my budget at the moment searching locally for them but no luck so far.. installed a fpr made 137whp lol at 40psi but going to get an ems so looking for at least 145 still don't do intake or exhaust

Good quality JDM headers will make a difference. If you cant locate one you can get good improvements by replacing the factory 2-1 pipe. The factory one isnt such a great design. If you can find a good welder to fabricate one using some mandrel bends a little bigger than the standard pipes you will see results. Of course this assumes ur engine is in a fwd car.

Hey Jim, it's hard to know absolute power when all dynos have variation between them, but from the seat of the pants, do you feel like the Pon Cams made a big difference? Do they feel like they pull through most of the rev range? Worth the money?

New dyno run using Mines ecu. Probably could have got a little more but something flew out of the gearbox and through the bellhousing. So never got chance to adjust distributor or cam pulley. Gotta get rid of that dip around the 7000rpm mark. Was using straight avgas this time.

Regarding the exhaust, I dont think we actually differ much. My car still uses the factory blacktop 4-2 section. The part thats changed is the 2-1 piece which has been replaced with a genuine TOM's piece that I was lucky enough to find at a scrap yard. Still has the name plate on it. TOM's only made the 2-1 section for the blacktop engine and this definitely has larger diameter pipes than the stock unit. In fact where it joins to the main exhaust system is about 60mm

Hey Jeff, do you know the ID and length of the 4-2 primaries?

Thanks!

Wow that's a lot bigger than I would have expected. The TRD headers I am using are something like 35mm ID, and I suspect they are holding me back. Ae111 and Kelford 270's.

Tomei reccomends the factory 110 degrees as the specified timing for their exhaust camshaft. Of course I am not sure what my exact timing is since the 7a gasket I am using is 0.6mm thick (stock is 1.2mm), and I am sure this alters the timing somewhat. Anyway my Toda exhaust cam pulley is set to the 107 degree position according to the series of diagrams that toda sends with the part. However I am not sure in which direction and to what amout the 7a gasket moves the actual timing but if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. Unfortunately the gearbox went before I could experiment with the cam gear. I suppose the ideal thing would be to fit a set of high compression pistons and use the factory gasket. That way both cams would be close to tomei's reccomended settings.

Well in one sense thats right, unfortunately dont have access to a degree wheel right now. However because the vvt pulley cant be properly adjusted the timing on the intake cam is always gonna be off once the thinner gasket is being used.

I slotted the dowel hole and ground down the pin a bit so I have about 15 degrees of adjustment on the VVT gear. You have to be careful to tighten the bolt enough but after 20K miles no problems with the Pulley moving around.

I know about those keyway methods. Mainly done here by the 7ag20valve conversions to get their timing right. Will look into it one of these days. But just for reference which way do you guys reckon the thinner gasket shifts the exhaust cam timing?? Does it advance it (meaning less than 110degrees) or does it retard it (meaning greater than 110 degrees)??

Thanks. My timing belt should be installed ok. Which would mean that my actual exhaust cam timing is closer to 105degrees. Might have to do some adjustments there when the car is back together. BTW found the cause of the gearbox noise. Piece of pressure plate came off and went thru bellhousing. The 8lb TOM's flywheel survived though.

If is a na engine I would go with 2.25" so not to lose the bottom end torque, if boosted then go with the 2.5" IMHO.
