 Megasquirt timing help!!! Reply  Edit

Got my car running recently and the timing says its advanced 20 degrees so does the timing light. Normal driving is fine but when i accelerate and go into boost it sputters and backfires. The a/f ratio under boost is about 12 to 12.5 at 7 psi. How can i adjust the timing through megasquirt? Im using the stock VAST system. Can anyone help me out and tell me how to adjust the timing with megasquirt.

Is megasquirt synced to your engine timing ? If you just wanna lower your ignition advance then you can just do it in the spark table.

So as long a it's synced I just adjust in the spark table not at the distributor? At idle it says 20 btdc at the crank and the megasquirt says the same. Is that normal?

Set your distributor and timing as you would on a stock 4age . Go into megasquirt : megatune/tunerstudio and sync your engine timing with megasquirt timing (FIXED TIMING).

To advance/retard your ignition map you do so in your spark table. You don't touch the distributor after timing is synced. At idle most people aim for 10-15 degrees BTDC.

There is info somewhere on the net about syncing timing (FIXED TIMING) just search for it .

I don't have the trigger wizard or anything like the link, mine is just the basic settings, will that matter? I should still be able to set the base timing like that? (not in front of my laptop right now) And yes I'm pretty megasquirt illiterate if you can't tell! Lol. The guy that was helping me flaked so I'm trying to figure it all out myself and I have never tuned a car before so this is all new to me.

You'll want to absolutely visit a dyno for the final tune. Too many people get into a standalone or programmable piggyback and forget the dyno is the most important part. There's only so much you can do on the street. If you care about power and torque output, that lies in your timing table, which is the main reason to visit the dyno. Fuel you can get done just fine on the street, I've personally had very good results with VEAnalyzer in MegaLogViewer. There's no sensor or gauge to measure torque output as there is a wideband to measure fueling. Anything that just has a street tune can be regarded as an educated guess in the best case.

What ECU do you have? MS1 or MS2? Do you know what firmware version you're running? Let me know what ECU and firmware and I'll let you know where to find all the settings you'll need to set your base timing. These options can be different places in the tuning software between the various ECU / firmware versions.

TunerStudio is the correct choice for your tuning software. It's not recommended to use MegaTune anymore.

Very good advice.

Some really good tuners have gotten ignition table dialed in on the street to a point of it only making very little more hp and tq when the car was taken to a dyno. Now such can only be done with a lot of experience. I do however agree that for the sake of safety and ease that you take it to a dyno.

I suspect you have the wrong version of megatune. There is a version online that you only get 8x8 tables etc.

Tunerstudio is where its at .

I know i need to go to a dyno eventually, i played with timing an found it was way advanced so i pulled some out and it got better. Still need to do more tuning though. I have the newest version of tunerstudio i just dont know much about this whole process. The tables are 16x16. I just need someone who knows what they are doing more so than i do. Also the megasquirt was bought and put together for me so i dont even know what i have. The guy that was helping me bailed on me and wont answer my calls.

Have you set the base timing with megasquirt yet ? If havnt then you are just chasing your tale with the ignition map.
