I gave many advice to people, and once ..I was at your page ... i use to go these drift events before and i worried about what i can or cant do compared to others ..and thought about my motor or car my biggest advice is: stop worrying to much of others and what you can do ..and just have FUN and focus on yourself .. i gave this advice to many people ..problem nowadays people just let themselves down and not focus on what they enjoy..people just seem to drown on alot of things and just start comparing themselves to others or their car ..then they end up gettin in a dump ..also the stupid trend where if hes goin pro i should to also ,even tho your budget dont allow etc i gave tooo much advice to a friend before ..and wasted my time and lost all trust in him ...dont get egged on too much by others and keep your hope up by just treatin it for fun i find blacktops pretty fast so with it itll hold 3rd/4th much easier ..ive driven alot of 20vs and theyre ok..but 4.7 and 1pc driveshaft makes a bigg difference..

Wheels - 15x8 Tires - 195/50. I use Dunlop Star Specs in the front. The rears are whatever, but I try to bring at least one pair of new tires. Usually Dunlop DZ101Spring rates are 8 and 6. BC Coilovers, T3 panhard bar, front and rear strut tower bars. Camber at -2.0 up front.

That is a lot of grip for a stock 4A. I would try a beat ass set of 175/65/14s off moms honda fit or something. At 50psi at least.

this ..if i get desperate i use 6js or even 175s ... thing with 86 is all bout balance and your recipe ... i use to tandem with lots of 20vs and built 86's on built 16vs and all i did was some spl things to my car so i can match them on my bluetop ..also my driving was different ..you gotta know what works and makes this car go to be honest ..i never run 15x8's ever on my rear or even too new grippy tires in the back from the get-go

i always run 15x8 xxr's and new 195/50's what i do to combat the grip i start them at 70psi and work my way down as they start to loose grip. also i dont think corollas are built for long tracks(i have one to) so i just drift what i can and dont worry so much about linking the long sections of the track the tighter ones i have the most fun on.

this .. I go by this saying were ..if you have to pump up to plus 50 ..youre compensating for something in your 86 ..too much grip, back heavy , wide rims ,the grip of the track ..etc i use to always just leave it at 40-46 and its fine ..but lately since my car changed ...im having to pump up to plus 50 | Quote » | also i dont think corollas are built for long tracks(i have one to) so i just drift what i can and dont worry so much about linking the long sections of the track the tighter ones i have the most fun on. |
hence the words dont worry have the most fun on if youre not havin fun and youre worrying to much ..Id you have to change your game plan ..my 2cents

I usually run 50psi. I will try more next time.Don't get me wrong I do have fun. It just seems as though I'm not improving anymore. I also have not been to any other courses or events - everything else is at least 4-5 hours away I would like to try some new courses

If you are 100% set of running new tires, I vote get a set of supras and buy a set of all season service grade cheap 185/60/14.400 tread wear or more. You will do much better once you get used to the new balance.

yep. i had a stock 16v bluetop with a 256 intake cam. maybe 120bhp on a good day. ran on 14x7 rewinds with 185/60/14 falken zeix 512. never really got to 3rd gear speeds at fontana, but i was holding sweepers pretty good with 6/5kg coilovers. oh and about 40-45 psi.i would try stepping down to 14x7 with 185's for sure. and star specs are a bit more grippy than zeix. failing that, maybe time to put cams in the 20v? that was actually my next step. i needed power and a 2 way diff (mine was OEM) was going to go with hi-comp 16v with cams, or maybe 20v.

hey garage86, ive recently started drifting my 86 every week at the sonoma events and had a question. you said if your pumping up psi above 50 your compensating for something in your 86. is there a problem with goin with high psi's? 2 events ago i forgot my wheel lock key so i ran the event on my street tires (15x8 0 offset) and ran the psi at a lil above 40 since our air compressor broke while pumping them up. for the life of me i couldnt get it to slide, seemed like i had more traction on the rear tires than the fronts and it was plowing me foward. it was the worst ive done yet and wasnt very fun. so hearing some of you say you run 40psi had me wondering what my problem was.i usually run my drift rims (14x7 +10 offset) at 80 psi and its slides like butter. now my 86 isnt a purpose built drift car, its a daily with full interior, bass tube and i dont think its super light. running the car with the high psi has been really fun and i havent tried running a lower psi to see how it changes the handling. ive been concentrating more on my steering work then anything else since thats where i think i need the most improvement. i was just curious what your thoughts are of running such high psi's and if there are any drawbacks from running the tires so high. oh and i dont care what others think, im doing this solely for myself. pure fun, not a single thought of trying to be a pro or anything. i just wanna be able to serve my car like a sav and become a better driver along the way!

I was never really into pumping past 50psi and above ....unless its really bad to kick out .....I always see 86 drifters blasting up to 60 or even worst 80psi lol ... super blammo if it pops hehehe ( trust me ive met alot of 86 guys at the track and use to hold drift events w/ friends) I have this thing I go by ..everytime i go to a track event .its always a ticking clock ..its from 8am to 4pm whatever ..and you have sessions ..and by 10 am I seriously need to have the car dialed ! like have it handling the way i want it ...and thats where some drifters dont get imo ..or dont know what works and what they can adjust to their car ..how the back end snaps ,steering snaps or slow down the steering etc ..or how to adjust their driving ..( this is by experience from the past of having bad track events , time will make you understand i guess ) with this flush flush thing nowadays everyone wants the gnarliest offset/track and widest rim ... i even know some dudes who rock super big wheels also with also a SPACER lol .......no one wants to run skinny rims cause it looks ugly etc etc ...but it aint gonna work on the rear of a 86 N/a 20v or 16v lol .... its just gonna hinder it and how it flows or snaps ..i hope you get my sense its like a recipe on 4age 86's... why run a 15x8 15x9 15x10 lol rim neg offset then run newish tires super grippy on 40psi ..its gonna take ya at least half of the track event to wear it out and get use to unless you pump it to 60 and have gobs of torque ... corollas need less like 7j on 14's or whatever ..last time i ran a 15x8 on ziex i spun it but it didnt flow so well in the back and car handle choppy and ruin your style/handling i dont know each has its own pref ..and everyone has different motors etc ..but with corolla with its original motor or 20v ....i always ran 7js in the back on 40-50psi crappy tires ... right off the bat i already how its gonna feel ..im broke like most 86 dudes so i just try to get use to what I have you know ...supra wheels on calientes or cheap wan lis are perfect lol and sometimes pumpim up too high like 80psi wont get you nowhere ..itll just spin lol just try to find out what works for you ..ex Ueo old 14x8 front grippy tire front ..14x8 rear loose d1 car 14x7 volks ..grippy re-01 loose on the rear ..he says on 7's all the way around car feels like its more light and can get more angle ..but he compensates for the re-o1 grippy fronts to depending on the rear (depends on the track hes drifting in) imamura old d1 01 car dori2 15x8 front 14x7 wats rear on loose tires hibino 03 spec 15x8 champs grippy 14x8 wats rear loose theres alos alot of things to play with with rear traction ..susp,geo,angles,traction brackets blah blah ..also how you drive your car goodluck and have fun !!

thanks for the input. yeah i could see how 15x8's and more arent the best for drifting but they look bad ass on the street lol. i did horrible and had no fun on the 15x8's but like i said i had to. i wasnt about to leave the track, go home get the key, deal with crazy traffic on the way back so i just dealt with it. i did learn something from it so it wasnt a complete loss. the drift rims i run are exactly what you like, the 14x7 with crappy tires and i like how it slides. this next event im gonna knock it down from 80psi to 50psi and see how it does. i have been spinning out alot during the transfers so the lower psi might give me that little bit more traction to control the snap back. its all a learning process and im seeing out there how little things here and there help or hinder progress. one thing is for sure, the 1 piece driveshaft and welded diff were a great addition! i will be getting a 86 drift missle next week (thanks to my brother) that will be purpose built for drifting so im not doing anything else on my current 86. the welded diff on my current 86 will go to the missle and the missle's lsd will go on my daily. the welded diff isnt the best on the street though i dont mind it. the missle's motor will stay a stock bluetop (they are the motor i love). my brother has a 20v and its cool and all but im not sold on it. all money will go into suspension, seats and roll cage. i could care less how it looks. i want it to handle like a dream and since its got dents and rust all over i wont be scared about blapping the wall. my daily 86 that i take out there is so fresh and so clean that those walls make me cringe. well i gotta wait till the next event on the 27th since dumb ass nascar is in town. if i got any more questions ill hit you up. thanks again!

Like everyone else is saying. Ditch those 15x8sMy corolla had those same 15x8 sport cracks on it when I bought it and I made sure to get rid of them before ever taking the car to an event. All of my wheels are 14"s and all are 7, 7.5 or 8j depending on what I'm feeling that day. I run 185/60 all seasons (zeix, fusion hri, etc) yes, 185's. Seriously I won't even take free used tires if they are wider than that. 2 seasons ago I ran real grippy tires (star specs) up front (still 185/60 though) and they were great for getting to know my corolla after coming from high power S-chassis. But now I've started running all seasons all around in pursuit of higher speeds. The main things I see corolla dudes doing wrong is driving too slow for the gear they are in (or just too slow in general) and not clutch kicking when they need to. You can't be afraid to do real aggressive clutch kick entries and transitions to keep your wheels spinning. I was instructing some of the corolla guys at midwest bash a few weeks ago since I wasn't driving. And I had one guy who was way too big of a nerd, told me I didn't know what I was talking about and that clutch kicks are not a technique worthy of his car and that his problem was his tune. In reality, his problem was that he was trying to navigate a high second gear course in FIRST gear and sometimes bottom of second and was wondering why he couldn't link a single section of the course. He ended up spending half his day needing out on his laptop trying to tune his megasquirt, and the other half struggling on the beginner course. On the other hand, a few other guys took my advice and by the end of the day they were hauling in tandem trains with 400hp cars and linking extensions that some LS1 cars couldn't even touch. Moral of the story, get proper wheels and tires that you can actually spin, then drive faster and clutch kick more. KEEP YOUR REVS UP.

exactly ..just effin floor it i donnow how many times i drove like that where i didnt give a crap and chased so many cars or 86's with more power and all i did was floorin it during drift and really hard on the initiaton !! you cant be a baby on a 86 oh yeah ..i cant stand tech nerds ^^ theres always a bunch of those in drifting...all talk always blaming the standalone or whatever ..always talkin highly of themselves cause of their book pc knowledge

Im running XXR 002 15x9 with 185/60/r15 Continentals at 55psi. Feels perfect coming in 3rd gear and I was barely making 140hp. In tight sections when I got it in high revs it would accelerate like a beast while holding good angle as well.If anything try and get some mild cams that the stock ECU can hold.

Run your rear tires up to 65psi on 195-50-15, break them loose easy and it'll feel like you got some more power. Lower your psi after but for a stock 4ag that should do. 16v about 80psi, 20v 65ish psi for stock set up or you can run them up to 80psi like taka on a stock set up of course. I got one guy telling me 65psi and another 80psi so I started with 65psi and now keep them at 60psi and works for me. My current set up is a stock 20v with an exhaust, stock 4.3 r&p with a spool for zenki axles and stock t50, parts shop max coilovers 8kg front 6kg rear, 15x8-0, 195/50 Achilles for street, 35psi front, Federal 595ss 60psi but just for the rear. I have sway bars and lateral bar but inflating the rear tires really helped out the most imo. Best of luck

ive drifted on both ends of the powerband and ill say there really isnt anything more you can do with a less powerful car. people always say stuff like a stock 4ag can do it, or you don't need power. well I say.... you don't need shoes. but it is better without them. but high speed 3,4 gear drifts are not what you should have problems with. for example we drift at Nashville super speedway. 100 mph entries on the first turn. then 2nd, 3rd for the rest. I can do the 100mph entry and exit at around 50'60. but in tandem with every v8 powered 240. we can enter at the same speeds, but there power let's then drop down to let's say 30-40 mph. my blacktop will not keep the tires loose at that speed. so when I follow I go straight. when I lead the only way I can ever pull away is because they don't need that speed they aren't used to it and I can gain distance. Idk what anyone says. more power is better than less, as long as you don't go adding too much weight. like an ls1 is BARELY heavier than a ka
