Angry4ag's High boost REbuild (April 09, UPDATE) Reply  Edit

Well its been a year now and i am finally rebuilding my old setup with a new and improved bottom end.

Whats new? 7 rib block fitted with ductil custom sleeves, coated race bearings, pauter rods,Arias 82mm pistons and a high volume oil pump.

Heres the old setup........
http://www.sdsefi.com/features/jan064ag.htm

After the cylinder cracked i had to leave japan and had no time to rebuild. I got here to vegas and have been tied up ever since. Now i have finally broke the handcuffs and got the block sleeved.

Heres the old block with the crack........

New race block....

I also got board and had the oil outlets chamferd on all the journals (for free!)

When it comes to all the work that was done on my old car, it was practically a full DIY job with help from MOTORWORX in okinawa. The stuff i could'nt do like the welding and intake manifold design, was all done fabricated by good old Matt from motorworx. I wanted to go the same DIY route all the way through but i needed the block sleeved so i had a cool machine shop out here bless it : )
They did a pretty good job and it was not too expensive. Other than the block i am getting diffrent style intake mani made but we are still trying to get the design right.

Thats pretty much it for now, but as soon as i get off my ass, get an engine stand and piston ring file (which should be tommorow).. I will put the block together and slap the head on (unless i break down and get a 3 angle valve job done)

Stay tuned

I'll be the firt to admit I thought you were sooo full of @#$%#$%^ way back then..... I'm VERY impressed... not only with the orignal build but you added mods to keep it together.... Concerning the hollow set screws... that is an old sleevers trick... back when I was into the old Ford's 427 and 428 blocks were commonly sleeved... and the set screws were used as you describe to add a bit of strength to the deck to keep it all stable and strong.....

I have never delt with sleeving so i was pretty stoked . I did some more data collecting and asked my older friends about it, sure enough they said around what you said .

The next step is filing the rings. I will go on summit tonight and price out a filing tool. I wish i can just go and get an engine stand and a filing tool with no worry but i cannot. One of the things that keeps me going yet keeps me from not having this done quicker is cash flow. I am in the military and for every mod i have to try the cheap route unless nessasary.

Got any advice on gapping MR oldskewltoy???? and thanks ahead

PS: can you explain why and what made you think i was full of it? You can be brutal man Im very thick skinned.

This is what i was talking about with the new intake manifold project......

Heres the older mani.........

This manifold was fabricated by Matt (cheftrd) in 2000. Its really cool but lacked velocity stacks . Still, it was was on my buddies turbo 4a that also made around 500hp so its very functional

This manifold here is the latest one from Motorworx for a full drag ca18det..

Thsi one was just fabricated for my buddies 180sx in england by matt. I love the way its built, and also the quality of the surge tank/design. With its cool factor and also that i donated my old one, i will be getting one of these bad boys soon
Gotta get that volumetric efficiency % up right!

This one right here is a blast from the past........................

This was my first intake mani that was on my old ae101. I really wanted to use it for the RWD conversion but because of the modifications that needed to be done, and the lack of time i decided to use my buddies RWD one. Man I wish i still had it!but i donated this one too
(When i say donate i mean sell it

PS: Motorworx (cheftrd) is offering these for the 4ag and other powerplants for about 50,000yen(around $450) i think its awsome

"gapping MR"... sorry bit dense... or we are using different terms....

cmon.... 500+hp... you've got to admit for a low budget, you accomplished things many others did not....

I STILL don't think you can make them last long(YEARS)... but... you might... with refinement.... make it last at 300hp... which not many others can claim to do.....

Piston ring gap filing tips and tricks.

The cool thing is that i was not the first in okinawa to do that on a low budget. My friend rob was the first and i just took the setup to the next level.
I still do not understand why its hard to do when toyota gives you so many things to save money on. The low budget was product of really good reseach and use of stock parts. Why buy an after market fuel pressure regulator when the stock one will do fine? or better yet why not use stock gze coils insted of expensive aftermarket ones? ect.........ect........
It got even cheaper when the lack of good machine shops in okinawa forced me to do all the porting and cylinder head modifications in my room after work..
Alot of hotpockets and a few V8 porting guides..

(Notice the CD case modified for 4ag use

Now the funny thing is that you mentioned longgivity.I had the same setup in a ae101 and it lasted 3 years at around 23psi of boost and 400fwhp, so how is it hard to belive?
One thing that i do know is that i will not baby this new block or engine. I will take it to the limit and rebuild. My goal is to peak out at 600hp and i will be satisfied.
With the new block the only weak links right now are the head studs.
So we will see

For ring gaps, I have 3 things to say, and you can use a normal flat file you don't have to have anything special, just put it in a vice. Not to say you don't know these, you just asked for a little advice.

One, no mater what you do, ONLY move the ring so that the filing surface starts at the outside and goes inside of the ring. So if you are holding the ring with the gap facing away from you, only file pushing out, not pulling in and DEFINATELY not going back and fourth. This leaves the outside of the ring the strongest and is less likely to have any chips or imperfections there.

Two, cut very little at a time and measure often.

Three, make sure that you finish with the ends FLAT. So like 90 deg angle with the top and the bottom of the ring and when the ring is 'closed' the ends are parallel and not off one way or another.

Thats pretty cool ..........but .....................ive already went through what i went through (2 times). Not only am i running .40 over pistons but i will be aiming for 600, so i cannot waste no more time or money. That guy is just working on borrowed time. Its usually the same ol thing with other cars or projects. When an engine is tuned right its amazing how much HP the stock block can handle(2jz,rb26,sr20 ect....) But.........they never tell you how long its lasts. They will run strong but sooner or later they start to get major blow-by or shredded bearings(Ive been throught that more than i had to).

Either way i still wish him good luck and alot of congrats!

Hey Will, I just got you old AE101 intake mani modded to clear my bigger blower. I gotta wait 'till Monday to take my **** over to Matt to get the magnets put in my pulleys and the crank trigger mounted up, but other than that most of the fab work is done and it's time to start putting **** together and see what details I've forgotten. Good luck with your ****, when do you think you'll have it running again? What kind of chassis do you have?
