DIY: MAXGRIP LSD kit install instructions Reply  Edit

Finally! we have some numbers for you guys, before and after rebuilding the o.e.m. LSD with the MAXGRIP LSD kit. The LSD pictured in the instructions below is the actual LSD used in the following test resuls. We started with a zenki o.e.m. unit that was in good working order. The intital torque readings were taken before disassembly. We made special tooling, which allows one side gear to be held stationary, while the opposing side gear is rotated using a dial type torque wrench. The reading obtained is the actual torque value it takes to make the clutch plates slip within the LSD. Keep in mind, this is a static load test, there is no force being applied by the clutch members, also called pressure rings. Under dynamic loads (actual use in the car) the clutch members are forced apart, applying additional clamping force to the clutches. We are very excited about the final results and did not expect to get this high of an increase in torque.

Torque reading before rebuild @ 8 ft.lbs.

Torque reading after rebuild, with the MAXGRIP kit installed, just over 15 ft.lbs. That is an increase of 46% more torque!

awesome write up spence... im anxiously waiting on a 7.5 setup for my cressida project...

now if u could just do a write up on how to setup a ring and pinion...haha.. i wouldnt have to take it to every shop on the east coast and to get someone competent enough to set it up out here..:D

The 7.5" MAXGRIP kit is coming very soon! I won't be doing a differential write up though. There is a ton of information on how to do it already out there Thanks!

Do you mean the bolts that hold the top cover to the main case? If so 33 ft-lbs.

how does the initial torque of the stock lsd and maxgrip compare to an aftermarket lsd?

Well, you honestly really cannot compare them. The O.E.M. LSD uses coil compression springs that push the clutch members apart, similar to a Cusco. Even with the oversize springs we use on our MAXGRIP kit, it still doesn't equal the amout of spring load in the aftermarket LSD units. Kaaz and Tomei LSD units use 2 spring washers which create upwards of 1k lbs. of force. The upside to this in the Kaaz and Tomei is a high initial torque. The downside to this with the Kaaz and Tomei is the clutch members have to compress the spring washers under load so in essence the LSD is fighting itself, springs push in the oppositte direction that the clutch members push.

The plus with the O.E.M. and Cusco is the springs push in the same direction as the clutch members. This puts all the forces working in the same direction to clamp the clutch plates.

The O.E.M. LSD with our MAXGRIP kit, on the bench, has an initial torque of 15 lbs. break away torque. The Kaaz and Tomei are around 55-75 lbs. of break away torque on the bench. I have checked one O.S. giken LSD and it was near 120 lbs. break away torque. TRD 55-65 lbs. break away torque.

One thing I did with the O.E.M. LSD was to wedge the upper clutch member with a screw driver while reading the torque. This simulates a load as the LSD would see while installed in the diff and the wheels on the ground. It easily reached 75 lbs. without prying very hard on the clutch member. In short there is no way to make the O.E.M. LSD have as much capacity as aftermarket from the simple fact that aftermarket LSD units have more clutches that are larger in diameter which equals more friction surface area.

I believe the 93-95 rx7 used a torsen style LSD, we do not have a kit for that.

Right, OEM FD diff is Torsen type. S4 TII diff is clutch-type and will bolt into an FD. In fact, this is a common upgrade for folks making higher power (450hp and up I believe) and are breaking the Torsen units.
