Evan's 4age 20v Blacktop Turbo Build Reply  Edit

Hello everyone at club4ag.com I just want to begin this by saying thank ALL of you for sharing information and knowledge about these beautiful little engines. You all are awesome and cool people. So I'm going to share with you my 4age 20v BlackTop Turbo build from beginning to end. I hope you guys enjoy!

So my name is Evan I am 22 years old and I live in Montreal, Quebec. I fell in love with these little AE86s from the show Initial D. But not just because of that show I starting looking into them and seeing them at drift events. I loved the way they looked and it just seemed like it was a car that match me. It was a match made in heaven. I got so into cars that I changed from the welding trade and started a new career into the Automotive trade industry. I started school in April 14 2008 and I finished in November 2009. I did my stage at Zeke's Auto Performance in Montreal.

I've been looking for a AE86 for 2 years before I found the one I wanted and had the money to get it. It is a 1985 Corolla SR5 AE86.

I got it 150km away from my house it had a blown head gasket but only had 66,000km on it !

So I brought it to my school and they let me leave it there for 2 months until I was able to work on it. I got it fixed for under 100$ and I am using as a DD ever since.

Then I've starting searching what engine I wanted to put into it. A lot different kind went through my mind from the 13btt, 20btt, SR20DET, 4agze, 4age 16v, 4age 20v, 2jz, F20C, LS1 v8. Many went through my mind. But then i was searching for whatever engines and I came across a 1997 4age 20v Black Top that was only 400$ with the ECU but was missing a few things. So I ended up taking it home and the first thing I did was rip it apart cause the guy said there was something wrong with it. Well the engine was blown. Crank was finished and damaged so bad I couldn't just turn the crank. I would have had to get it re-welded and machined. So I thought that wasn't worth the money. Someone ends up donating me 2x 4age and a bunch of random parts for nothing. So I took everything apart and saw that the blocks were rusted to hell that the cylinder walls collapsed. But anyways I saw that they had the beefiest rods like the GZE but it was a Late Big Port from the FWD corolla GTS so I am using the crank and rods from that instead of the blacktop ones since they are garbage. Since I had those rods I just had the idea of going turbo just because I love boost and I was half way there.

So I end up getting some OEM .5mm over sized GZE pistons and getting the block machined at Zekes where I ended up doing my stage. So for the last year I've been just mapping out what I was going to do and how. So I've been buying parts whenever I had the cash to spare to put to my project. Here is where I'm at so far.

Here is my GZE (8.0:1) pistons with the notches that needed to keep the oil squirters

Also my boss at the body shop I was working gave me this A turbo from a Mistubishi Eclipse 2.0T. Its not the biggest turbo but it spools up pretty dam quick cause its small.

Here is my mock up of my engine of just the idea of what its some what going to look like but with different exhaust and an air box.

Ya so it looks like a rusty piece of poop right now since I got it acid bathed and took off all ugly orange paint that was one it originally.

So far the mods that I've done is custom home made water re-routing which is probably better then the 600$ ones they sell.

Deleting the distributor custom plug for the hole and going with the Ford EDIS off of a 1999 Ford Escort.

Also I got lucky and got 3x T50 transmission and a peddle kit and a GTS drive shaft for 200$.

I also found this little baby and got it for 250$ + 270$ to get it to my house.

I got the rims I wanted and the rear end I needed. I was gunna drive that for a bit but needed a little too much work like fuel lines, brake lines, brakes all around, fuel pump + basic tune up stuff and I didnt have the cash to get it running. So i chopped the rear end off and put some better tires on the rims and put it on my AE86.

So thats probably about it for now. I'm putting a T50 in my car with in the next 2 months so i'm gunna be running a manual 4ac until i get my 20v all up and running.

I will also post prices of everything I got cause this is going to be a budget build because I know I can build a beast AE86 for a really decent price.

If anyone has anything to say please leave a comment or ask any questions. I'm here for you all just like you all are here for me

Thanks,
Evan

Blacktop rods = garbage? I think you are mis-informed my man

They're great rods, but they are not what you need for your build.

When I did my ST turbo build I used these rods, on the left is standard ST rod and on right Crower rod

Pistons are Arias, at the time I did the engine....many moons ago, 5 valve decomped pistons were not available so I got decomped 4 valve and fly cut myself in a mill, then the tops ceramic coated, it worked well, no problems.

Sick I wanted to get some Arias or something forged but its about an extra 200$ to dish out on the pistons. I know its worth it but I hear the GZE ones work awesome. AS for rods the crower are awesome rods but I think are a litter pricey. I personally wanted to get some Belfab ones which are 400$ + shipping. But I got these GZE rods for free so I couldnt complain and I got a 2nd pair. So all I did was get ARP studs. I heard nothing but good things about the rods holding power. They are as thick as stock chevy V8 rods. So how much HP/trq you pushing? How much psi or boost you have? what size injectors are you using?

im using standard redtop 4age rods and making over 300hp. A mate has the same but runs over 500hp. Both out of 20v turbo engines. Neither of us have flycut the piston and neither have had any problems with the power we run

dude thats awesome. The rods i'm using are red tops i think also. They are from a 89-90 gts 16v. They are the same size as the 4AGZE ones. I got ARP rod studs to beef them up abit. Did you shot peen or any additional strengthening??

yeah its pretty awesome. The only stupid part to do is the head since I am not sure if Toyota sells the bucket shims...Besides that its pretty strait forward.

Ok heres some up date but still not too far into the build. I'm about 75% done. I need some Argon gas to weld up some custom parts for my water rerouting kit. Here are some pictures of some progress..

8.0:1 ratio GZE pistons

20v Head with 3 way valve seat job. I'm still waiting for the valve stem seals.... They aren't easy to get for some reason... OMG valve stem seals are the same as a 2000 Toyota Echo... They are $0.89 cents EACH at NAPA auto parts! I just found this out TODAY!

The block with brackets and thermostat housing & 20v water pump moded to work the housing.

Some more block pictures. I really wanted to go with detail with the paint

I found this among my stack of donated piece to me from a guy who has a AE92 GTS with a SilverTop 20v swap. And I traced on the Stainless Steel plate some stuff I have to cut out and weld tubing to for water rerouting kit I'm making.

Heres the water rerouting plate I made to keep the option to use it FWD if someone ever buys it off me and wants to put it in a FWD or MR2.

are they silver tops or black top. a ive heard from a lot of people tou can turbo a silver top stock but a black top can hold the boost with stock internals.

Im using redtop/ early 4agze conrods. Many people use silvertop but there is no point using blacktop ones. Blacktop ones bend under boost and they are 19mm wide. Mine are 26mm wide

I am liking this thread. Seeing there is a picture of your pistons already installed I am guessing they are not going to have flycuts put in them. This will mean you will have an interference engine so make sure you tension the belt correctly ok?

Nice job on the rear bolt on plate too, are you going to thread it for the sensors?

So many guys in america and Australia flycut pistons and yet no one here in NZ does it. My 4agte 20v is making 355hp daily or 508hp on high hp tune (32psi tune) and i havent flycut pistons and have no intention to. Engine has been going for 3 years strong now ...

well I just think it's cheap insurance. I had a friend loose a few thousand dollars when his built turbo engine broke the head, turbo, pistons and block because the cam timing was out.

Wow. Do you have a build thread anywhere? I've seen that intake manifold design on another NZ car; guy's name is Barry? Are they sold by anyone or did one of you design them? Sorry for all the questions but I'm trying to get all the info I can for my own 7AGTE build

yea barry designed the intake manifolds. He no longer sells them as he wasnt making alot on them and they are not cheap. I think i paid $550-$600 NZD for it. I do have a build thread on toyspeed.org.nz but otherwise i dont. I did start one on here but i have no idea where it has gone now

I'll ask him personally also, but what do you think the odds are he'd make one more? I'd be willing to pay a bit more than that (plus shipping to the US) if I didn't have to deal with the R&D and designing one from scratch. That manifold is obviously proven!

yea they are awesome manifolds. I make 365kw at 32psi and barry on his 7agte makes 336kw on 26psi from memory. I dont know what the odds are. He still has all the designs for them but did comment that he wouldnt be making any more...

To the top. I dont know if i should continue this build or not... 20v full head for sale.... Might go 16v instead.

So Blacktop 20v head for sale with ITBs, New TPS sensor and all sensors attached to the head. Make reasonable offer and will part out.
