FelPro Head Gasket Issues 85 GTS Reply  Edit

Need some input here as I just finished replacing the head gasket and overhauling all the gaskets/seals on my 85 GTS. I noticed when installing the gasket that the oil port near the distributor wasnt exactly lined up with the head gasket opening but thought nothing of it. Well everything is back together and whenever I crank the motor over oil flows out of head right near that port and runs down the side of the block almost as if its being pushed right out under the gasket.

Is this a issue with the FelPro gasket and would I solve the problem by using a OEM Toyota gasket? Could there be another issue like a warped head?? Im just alittle frustrated and could use some advice.

I know I should have gone all OEM Toyota stuff, regretting that now

Thanks!

dou have a 16-valve engine if so did you use the right head gasket kit what was the part #
it is possible to turn the head gasket upside down then place it end to end this would allow the oil seal to be mis=aligned

Yea its the stock 16 valve big port, I used the FelPro 9661PT. It seemed like it would only go one way so Im not sure if reversing it was an option.

Here are some pictures I just took today, you can see the oil leaking past the head gasket and then running down the side of the block. It starts and runs fine other than the leak.

Look right above the oil filter

I won't say it'll fix your issue... but the OEM gasket has a seal around the oil port.

headgasket upside down?

happens pretty often. Im running an OEM FelPro headgasket and had no fitment issues.

I've never had trouble with the FelPro headgasket. My bet would be it was installed upside down or it was damaged before/during installation. You're going to have to pull the head either way to find out.

Also check the head bolts are torqued properly.

That is the block drain for the coolant.

You guys are making me think I installed it backwards and upside down, makes me a little embarrassed. Do you think if I tear it back apart and turn the gasket around the right way it can still be used? I only started it twice, I dont think it would be damaged but what do you think.

Oh that makes sense. Thanks.

As for your head gasket, it doesnt matter how many times you ran it really. Once its torqued down it either stays or it gets changed out. If you take it out and torque it down again youre more than likely gonna have horrible compression and/or leaks because the material has already been compressed

It happens a lot. At least now you know to check. Good lesson for the future. Good to hear that's all it was. I hope you get it up soon. I never liked my car being down for long.

Felpro has a top reputation, going back at least to muscle car days.

Sooner or later we all have a Homer Simpson Moment (D'OH!) and as long as you only installed ONE head gasket backwards, welcome to the club.<G>
