 Engine oil leak Reply  Edit

My Ae86 GTS smallport has developed the engine oil leak recently, and trying to figure out where.

The oily areas are, back side of oil pan (the front area is dry), engine back plate (engine side), transmission mount to the block, crossmember, steering rack, and it's reaching the bottom of the AC compressor through the bracket. Everything above the oil pan seems dry.

I've checked the followings and they are good.
Camshaft seal, front main seal, distributor, dipstick tube.

I'm sure almost everyone on this forum dealt with some sort of oil leak and I'm curious if anyone had the similar symptom and see what that was. It'll be sad if it's the rear crank seal because it was replaced with TOYOTA OEM about 30000 miles ago along with the clutch. What do you think?

Have you tightened your camshaft covers recently ?? They have rubber gaskets
and there is a rubber sealing washer under the fixing nuts. Those rubber parts get
squashed down over time, and you have to nip the nuts up every now and then, to
stop the cover gaskets leaking.

Yeah, the cam cover gasket was changed about 10000 miles ago, so were the cam cover nut gaskets. I checked around the head and I don't see any oil leak there. I wiped off and cleaned the oily area thoroughly and ran for about 30 min and nothing happened. Then I drove 2 hours next day and the same area is wet and couldn't find where the oil was coming from.

Sandwich adapter?
I have the aftermarket oil cooler sandwich adapter, and the bottom side is kind of oily very little but it looks more like a spill from the filter change. And it never gave me a problem before.

Oil Pan Gasket?
After reading other threads, I'm also looking into checking the oil pan gasket (from what I've heard it's not usual to leak there), but it's kind of hard to see.

Rear Crank Seal?
The last time I had the leak on the rear crank seal on the FX16, if I remember correctly, the oil was coming through inbetween the transmission and the engin backing plate, not the engine side of the plate. But the leak I have now seems to spread more than that.

I haven't quite saved enough for the full engine rebuild and hoping to take care of this with minimum expense. Any more input will be appreciated.

Just to conclude it, the leak was from distributor inner seal, again. This time oil was dripping directly on to AC compressor to the engine support, unlike other 2 cases I've had where the oil ran from the dizzy through the block to the oil pan.

the leak was from distributor inner seal, again

that's the reason why I decide to buy a non rebuild distributor..opted out to buy a brand new distributor from toyota..for $360

Yeah, OEM parts are expensive but in the long run it'll save time and probably money.

well as far as I can tell the p/s tubes have some oily residue but there no oil or liquid leaking from them that I can see and everything around the oil pan has oil on it the a/c compressor and even the alt does too but I cant see any source of it.
