 SoCal NEED HELP: Rear Suspension Top Mount Repair and Reinforced8:41 PM 1/2/2011 Reply  Edit

Need help in repairing this and would also like to reinforce the other side so this won't happen again. I was trying to figure out where the rattling noise is coming from and this is where I found it...

I am willing to tow the car locally and would like an expert and experienced place that can handle such fabrication. Any help and guidance where to go is appreciated. Thank you.

jsp pretty sure he can fabricate a new mount or weld a thick piece of steel on that area

were you using a rear coilover setup? or a special uppermount ?

wow, i've never seen that happen before, it looks like he used a custom rear coilover set up, definitely looks like a shock and spring combo.

definitely get both sides reinforced if you want to run that type of coilover set up in the future.

It's not custom. It's D2 coilover suspensions for the AE86. I got it when it first came out.

the D2 coilover set up is a single shock and spring, that puts way too much strain on 2 small points in the chassis. definitely reinforce the upper shock mount since you'll be repairing the damage.

Either you reinforce the chasis or change out your suspension. Honestly, I would reinforce the entire chasis. Ask why? These cars take a toll afterawhile driving them hard and/or lowered. Problem w/ repairing where it tore is that it is likely to tear again next to the weld. You can't help. That's what heat does.

I could see it being repaired and used for it's orginal purpose which was a "shock tower/mount" and not "weight supporting point". If you keep the suspension, then chop off the top of it where it ripped. Fabricate a box like top mount welded onto the body w/ a thick enough plates, and weld across left to right at least the minimal.

Post photos of the repair. A guy who use to work for me used to hang turns like nuts on his VW until one day there was a hair line crack from the firewall all the way to the front support just above the lower unirail. I ended up welding it straight through, but I told him his driving had to stop. LOL.
