 Toyota FT-86 is Scion's FR-S? Reply  Edit

http://www.formulad.com/blog/2011/behind-the-scenes/scion-introduces-fr-s-sports-coupe-concept-at-2011-new-york-auto-show/

Rear-wheel drive concept makes world debut | Design focus of Pure Balance | Boxer engine utilizes Toyota’s D4-S direct and port injection system

04.20.2011– New York – Scion unveiled the rear-wheel drive FR-S Concept sports coupe today at the 2011 New York International Auto Show. The concept, which sets out to stimulate the souls of true driving enthusiasts, will be at the Scion display through May 1. The FR-S Concept will inspire a new model coming to the Scion brand next year.

“Scion is always experimenting with new things,” said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. “The brand is iconic with the xB, adrenalized by the tC, and groundbreaking with the iQ. The FR-S will expand the brand into yet another new dimension that I know it is truly destined for.”

The FR-S is a true “scion,” born into a lengthy history of Toyota performance cars and motorsports. The sports coupe is most inspired by the AE86 generation of the Corolla, better known as the Hachi-Roku, meaning “8-6” in Japanese. The front-engine, rear-wheel drive coupe was lightweight and well balanced, making it a solid choice for driving enthusiasts.

Inspired by the AE86, the FR-S is built around the core goal of achieving “pure balance,” which begins with the strategic placement of a flat 2.0-liter boxer engine in a front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. The engine’s compact size and shape allows the FR-S’ powertrain to be mounted lower and further back towards the rear, giving the car a lower center of gravity and a dynamically favorable front-to-rear weight ratio.
The FR-S’ naturally-aspirated engine is innovative, being the first boxer to incorporate Toyota’s D4-S injection system, which utilizes both direct and port injection, resulting in increased horsepower and torque throughout the entire powerband, without sacrificing MPG.

The flat-four can mate with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The manual offers quick and precise shifts with a short-throw, while the automatic transmission features aggressive, sporty shifts that are initiated by steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Power is distributed effectively via a limited-slip differential.

The idea of “pure balance” is further realized by the FR-S’ lightweight design and short wheelbase. The combination allows the car to be quick and nimble into and out of any corner, with dynamic maneuverability and confident stability.

“Akio Toyoda has mentioned that he is going to bring the fun-to-drive spirit back to Toyota,” Hollis said. “I know that the Scion FR-S Concept is one of the ways that he plans to accomplish that.”

The fierce exterior of the FR-S is a good reflection of its inner power. The intimidating proportions of the concept give it a dominant stance that bleeds performance. The profile, inspired by the Toyota 2000GT, reveals a hood-line that is remarkably sleek and low, made possible by the boxer’s architecture.

The low stance continues to exaggerate the FR-S’ menacing face, which is made up of sharp lines, a wide mouth and angular headlights that include bright LED clusters.

The solid panel roofline is sleek, lightweight and rigid, slotted with an aerodynamic shape that channels air cleanly over to the top.

The front fenders protrude upward, making space for the massive monoblock Five Axis 20×8.5-inch wheels, while the muscular rear fenders are widened to house the 20×10.5-inch wheels, emphasizing the FR-S’ staggered stance and rear-wheel-drive setup.

The rear fascia sits low and wide, with extensive lower treatments that surround the dual exhaust exits and contribute to excellent aerodynamics. LEDs illuminate both the edgy taillights and the bold “SCION” logo.

The concept features four-piston-caliper front brakes that clamp down on monstrous 18-inch annular carbon ceramic matrix rotors that are fixed to the wheels in a motorcycle-fashion.

The FR-S Concept is layered in rich coats of Code Red, the appropriately named color that consists of a custom blend of candy and a developmental additive from BASF called Mearlite SSQ.

Concept Dimensions
Length – 168.2
Width – 71.5
Height – 47.4
Front Track – 61.8
Rear Track – 59.9
Wheelbase – 101.2

i guess its good they are taking their time on it though, should make for a great car!

i'm just curious how the recent incidents in japan are going to affect things such as this.

This version of the concept is by far the nicest I think. I hope a lot of the styling gets translated into production.

They are still not clear on what thier gonna badge it as... corolla...celica...or a scion; it might stay as a scion since they want to attract the younger crowd....my buddy from Toyota corporate told me this

Best version yet. Toyota Win.

I really don't see what the big deal is about it being badged as a Scion. This is a $20 fix of buying two Toyota badges. I'm sure the first thing coming over seas from the land of the rising sun will be JDM FR-S "TOYOTA" badges guys. Not a big deal.

I agree It will be a scion and no matter what they badge it as if its like the concepts when its produced it will be a big hit and people like me will rebadge it. No big deal. just make the thing that's all that matters they could name it the homo gay and ill still be inline at the bank for a loan.

It already being a boxer engine made by Subaru, I see alot more people doing STI swaps (300+hp all day) due to the fact it will be a mostly bolt in affair. Trading a N/A Subaru engine for a Turbo Subaru engine. More people would be willing to do a bolt in swap w/ no cutting in their brand new FR-S over making a 10-20 yr old engine fit. The low hood profile is going to make it hard to fit much else without using an Edelbrock HEMI shaker hood hooootttttt dog *knee slap*

I think many of us that are on the "Phuck V8's" bandwagon are there because we are nostalgic for the old 2000-2005 D1 Drift days. Cars that had good privateer influence and a crowd that was silly. Felt like being at a high-school pep-rally. Very corporate today and the diversity is being lost which leads to a bland sport to watch. More emphasis on WINNING than putting on a fun event.

You can't drift a car with 4 banger. Period! It's scientifically and physically not possible that's why people are swapping V8s in the Corolla. I don't have the budget for a V8, so I'm gonna slap a 6 banger, boxer type, twin turbo motor in my FR-S when in comes in next week.

if the car drives amazingly well and puts a smile on my face when im driving on the track or mountains then i could care less what it looks like, what it is called, or what engine set up they use(i peresonally dont like boxer engines though ).. theres a LOT of awsome cars that are generally owned by d bags but thats not a reason to why you should hate a car..

i think this car should be almost perfect.. light weight, balanced, small, cheap, and fr.. idk seems pretty good to me .. i think if they could build a high reving engine like a k20 or k24 it would be perfect

i couldnt agree with you more.
one of the reasons i dont enjoy watching formula d.

doesnt mean i dont like v8's.
the 1uz is one of the best cheap engines available for a corolla to be competitive/have fun.

i see what you guys meant though. bending the rules to allow one individual modify a tranny tunnel while telling another privateer he can't because he doesnt advertise well enough is where the sport went wrong.

just think though, this car with a small high revving LIGHT v8 would be rad.

I can't believe how much crying there has been over this car.

We finally get something to fill that hole in the market and people start crying about the name plate, the engine, and a bunch of other mostly irrelevant details. We finally get a relatively inexpensive, lightweight FR/2+2 coupe that's been painfully missing and there's been practically nothing but complaints.

This needs to be a success and push other makers out of their comfort zone of producing the same bland crap they've been doing for the past 15 years. You guys need to wipe your tears, pull up your big girl pants, and realize this is the shot in the arm our market needs.
