The "New AE86" will never beat the "old" one at what it's good. Not many cars can. Not with safety being what it is, not with emissions being what they are, not gonna happen.

Not to dig up old graves but I just think it would be awesome if it were done like ours.. first came the SR5 with its 120hp fuel efficent engine, the next year out comes a GT-S with maybe a 2ZZGE? 180hp.. RWD.. The greatest part of it all is watch out Civic Si, The new Toyota has something Honda never thought of.. Traction! haha

you don't have to be addicted to this site just to search on a topic before you make a new post about it. In my eyes it's just laziness on the users part.

..... I mean in the top 10 topics right now 3 of them are about the new ae86. Is it really hard to see that there is another topic about the EXACT same thing. I mean this has even been discussed for what 2 or 3 years now. Just stick to what you like and quit wishing for things that probably aren't happening anytime soon. Not trying to be overly mean but wow

This article actually carries some new information that hasn't been in the last 11ty posts about a rumored new AE86:| Quote » | | Within days of announcing Toyota's formation of a "Committee to create interesting cars," this summer's Best Car Plus magazine reveals that the long-rumoured new AE86 type car has indeed been spawned by the group and should be in showrooms in the winter of 2008. The new article goes into some detail of the new car's spec. Under 4m long and 1.7m wide, it's pretty low at 1.35m tall, and engineers have been directed to keep weight below 1,000kgs. Power will come from a 1.5L 2NZ-FE good for 120 horsepower. What has been unknown until this time is where Toyota would source a cheap RWD drivetrain, but Best Car has learned that it will come from new partner Fuji Heavy Industries - better known to you and me as Subaru. And the best news of all? The committee's final directive is to keep the new car's sticker price below 1.5million Yen. That's about $12,300 USD in today's money. |
They do this... they get my money.

In defense of the OP, stuff about this "new AE86" have popped up on a bunch of automotive news outlets today. I try to make sure I'm not reposting stuff, but I've made a "post Type-R" or two by mistake myself.

No.This is a media mock up of what may be a great car... But no where in TOYOTA is there a plan for this particular car. However, with F1 and all the efforts in Motorsports like NASCAR and other venues, Toyota is on the run to revive the adherence to SPORTS CARS and heritage of cars in motor sports arena.

I hope they go back to their racing roots again. Working at a Toyota/Honda dealership, people don't want sports cars...they want SUVs that can get 40mpg or more. Both companies are pushing their gas milage numbers...not their breakneck hp numbers. Honda still fronts the S2000 as a sports car, but toyota hasn't made a decent car in a decade. On a funny sidenote....most of the HYBRID vehicles get worse gas mileage than the same car without a HYBRID transmission, one Toyota SUV in particular. Ask the mechanics when buying a car, not the salesman.

does anyone have that issue of Best Car lying around?I agree, with a lot of you in, yes, there have been about a billion posts on a "new AE86." I have to agree with DI, though. If they do this, and it's actually out in '08, they'll get my money. It does seem doubtful that the'll hit those numbers, though, with safety legislation what it is. The engine numbers also seem doubtful considering it's a bit oversquare, it's originally 1.3L, and makes 85 HP. I'm sorry, but a 35 horsepower jump for a motor that small seems a little unrealistic...although I'm all for another yamaha head :-P Still, if they do make it, I'll be the first in line. I'm gonna need a daily driver after I turn my coupe into a track slut, right? hahha

4ag is way underpowered for a car this age. more like a 2.0L 250hp + aluminum 4 cylinder that is lighter than a 4age and rev's up to 9000+. if honda can do it, i'm sure toyota can too.

why not put something like a 20v in it tho? what was the last year they came in the ae? my only point is, if they ARE going to throw the word ae86, or even just AE in it anywhere, i want to see some sort of a 4ag. other wise it's just another corolla. not to saying a 2.0L 250hp + aluminum 4 cylinder wouldnt be nice, that would be more than nice.

you gotta agree at least that creating hype, no matter how much it sucks, is good for those of us who would like to see the AE86 come back. Just look at the emergence of the pirus, toyota wasn't sure it would work so they didn't build very many and it looks like they just built the pirus for enviromental PR, but next thing you know everyone and there mama wanted one, and boom they are everywhere now. If toyota constantly hears that people want the AE86 (RWD platform back) then they are gonna build you and sell you an AE86 (granted they make a profit). so this talk and topic may not be a waste of time, somewhere in the wind toyota might actually be listening to us.

No, no, no, no. DRIVETRAIN. Not motor:
| Quote » | ...will most likely be powered by a 1,5 liter 2NZ-FE engine. ... Toyota's new partner, Fuji Heavy Industries (or Subaru to most people) will be supplying the RWD drivetrain. |
