New to AE86s... here my new moneypit. Reply  Edit

I come from Subarus, here are my previous cars.

08 WRX, my favorite. I miss it dearly.

My old winter beater... 93 Impreza.

My current DD, 99 Legacy with some JDM stuff.

I put 08 STI front Brembos on it a few weeks ago.

And, the new money pit. 1986 Corolla Sport SR5.

me^

the GF was helping me inspect stuff. I towed it ~400 miles back to my house, and started tearing into it the first night lol.

It's got some super janky wiring for the headlights and horn, but other than that it's pretty sweet. With the help of the local ae86 club, we got it running last night. Rebuilt the carb, put some new fuel in it, and after sorting out some small electrical issues, she fired right up. She sat on the side of the road in a podunk town for 3-4 years. Frame is straight, the rust is minimal, just needs some new fenders. I already got a passenger fender, now I just need the driver's fender Just over 250k on the odometer.

About me/finding this car:
I am currently a Toyota T Ten student at Weber State University, dual majoring in T Ten and Auto Body. I've been working on Subarus for a few years now (Subaru is what started my passion for cars), and decided I wanted an AE86. I came across one on the way from Phoenix (my hometown) to Ogden (where I go to school). It was parked on the side of a house in the middle of nowhere. I knocked on the door, no answer. So I left them a note saying I wanted to buy their old red corolla. I got a phone call about 2 weeks later, they only wanted $300. A few weeks later I came up with a trailer, and brought it back home.

Nice! I've always wanted a 2.5rs to make into a rally car :D

So... I went on a test drive today. Transmission feels great, shifts smooth. I think my u-joint is rattling around a bit, and my power steering doesn't work. Come to find out there was no fluid in it. So, fill it up right? Then watch it drain all over the driveway? ugh.

Am I missing a bolt that goes there or something? lol.

Yup. I most definitely have haha.

I was chasing down vacuum leaks and such, trying to find out why my car was having trouble idling and starting. Well, for one it's carbureted. But it shouldn't have been this bad.

I got frustrated, and let it sit in the backyard for a few days. Then I decided, hey I should check the spark plugs. Low and behold...

New plugs went in, and it went from idle surging 1000-1500 rpms, to a solid 2000rpms. Now it's time to adjust the idle and the distributor timing a bit, and I should be all set :D

Nice job on the amazing find! I hope you have fun with the car and learn a lot along the way.

A personal question, if you don't mind me askin': How do you like the T Ten program? I took the first quarter of it up in Washington where I'm from, but ended up hating it and barely passed the class... The reason being was the instructor! He sucked at telling us anything, and what he did us, was wrong. o_o
Anyways, just wanted to know how you're liking, as I'm trying to make my decision on whether or not I should continue it at another location.

I love the program where I'm at, Weber State in Ogden. The first class, electrical, is the hardest. That's where most people drop out at, which is why they make it first. Stick with it My teacher is slowly re-writing the whole T-Ten program. The new electrical program was his design, and it's A TON better than the old one. If you come to Weber, you won't be disappointed! And the T-Ten program counts as an Associate's Degree at Weber State!

update on my car: Adjusted idle and timing a bit, still idling terribly. I got some BALLER NGK plug wires to match the NGK plugs.

I'm still having difficulty with cold start as well.

I put in a "cheap" lightweight battery last week. Wal Mart lawn mower battery ftw haha. My friend has been running one in his 240 drift car for 2 years now with no problems, so I decided to see how long it would hold up in an AE86 SR5.

Tomorrow I'm pulling off the distributor. It is adjusted all the way, and it's like if I could adjust it a little bit more, it would idle much better. But alas, I cannot. So, that leads me to believe that my issue lies within. I'll probably pick up a new cap and rotor tomorrow, my friend at O'Reillys ordered them in for me already.

it worked pretty well

So... my idle jet got clogged somehow. Just before that happened, I discovered that I wasn't getting a steady flow of fuel through the idle jet. I fixed quite a few vacuum leaks that I had overlooked previously, but even after fixing them there still wasn't a steady flow. After driving it for about 30 minutes after fixing the leaks is when the idle jet got clogged. It's been parked for a couple weeks now, I drive my subaru around. I've gotten pretty pissed at the corolla lol.

bumpskies. My 4AC blew today. I was idling, working on the carb, then it decided to go CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK, and now it won't go above 3k. Time to start getting things together for a GTS swap. In the meantime, I'm looking into a fuel cell setup. I can do most of the fabwork for it myself, so that's not a concern. It's just a matter of finding the right fuel cell, surge tank and such.

Good luck bro and keep at it. They are a money pit and a good challenge but the reward is priceless. I started out with worse corolla's than that, it is what you make of it and want out of it!

Slowly parts off of the blown 4AC are disappearing.

Hopefully I'll have my GTS swap done, fuel cell and surge tank done, and coilovers in the next 3 months. I want to start seriously drifting this thing in april. I've sitll gotta get my tax returns filed, then this car will get done a lot faster.

Spark plug wire tore when I was trying to pull them off of the spark plugs I've started tearing it down, getting ready for a full rebuild. Came with wiring harness, ecu, tranny, everything except the clutch slave cylinder and dizzy.

Now you are living the true 86 life hahaha but you still wont have enuff money haha, 86's arent money pits cuz pits have a bottom they are move like a never ending abyss haha. But, why the downgrade man imprezas are insane in performance and technology? I come rotaries, 1st and 2nd gen rx7's and I get a lil depressed at the 86's performance when I compare it to 7's. But, there is something about the 86, and I suppose thats why we have them haha, but I didnt and will not give up my rx7's haha bump!

I love my Subarus, but I can't afford a nice one right now. I have my Legacy as a DD, and it is a wonderful car. But, I wanted something fun. Subarus tend to understeer, they push through corners. I can tell you that there is something so much more enjoyable about a lightweight FR, rather than an AWD car. That, and it's much cheaper to build an AE86, and Subaru engines are a PAIN IN THE ASS to work on.

Anyway... more updates!

4ac out!

I ended up texting a friend and asking if there was a trick to getting this thing separated from teh trans. They just didn't want to budge. As it turns out, there were 3 more bolts that were covered in grease so I didn't see them or feel them. Took me a bit to find em. I think in total there were 6 bolts holding them together. I didn't have my FSM handy :/

I ended up ditching the heater/blower.

It would've been nice to have them, but the heater core was corroded (probably why my heater wasn't working like at ALL during the winter). So, if anybody wants a working blower lmk I'll probably end up getting a small heater that plugs into the cigarette lighter for the winter.

4age, almost done.

I still need to paint that valve cover, then bolt em on there. Clutch goes on, alternator, finish hooking up the wiring, and put the interior back in. So, I've still got about another 6 hours of work. I got 8 hours in today, I feel productive.

time for some moar updates.

I spent weeks going through the fuel, air, and spark systems to figure out why it wouldn't run right. Ended up being a bunk coupler. I'm going to make a better intake soon, but I want to move some stuff around a bit first.

I picked up an intercooler... looks like I won't use this one haha. Anybody want a mk4 supra intercooler? I'll take trades for a corolla intercooler

The interior is completely stripped out right now, I'm picking up a new seat tomorrow in the morning :D

I picked up the first seat of the pair that will go in the corolla. I'm doing a trade + labor + cash on these, so until the other dude can bring his car up to me, I get one seat. The other comes when he brings his car to me to swap some parts around.

Vios III with Subaru seat rails and sliders. Now I just need to get the ae86 bases and I'm set.

I'm still trying to decide on oil cooler mounting. I'm using an FC RX7 oil cooler.

I'm going to take off the bumper and see if I can move some stuff around to get it mounted a bit better, and then cut some holes for the lines to run.

I am picking the car up from my buddy's fabrication shop today... I had a test pipe made, as well as a new downpipe because the one that came with the engine was cut/mangled at about 1/2 way down.

I drove it home. Then ran into a few issues with the charging system.

I also got a box from Kenji at Cusco USA today. It's the little things that make me happy...
